What Is Involved In Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental Implant surgery is performed by dental implant specialists. They undergo extensive training and acquire years of experience before venturing into dental implant surgery.

Though the process itself is not complicated it does involve some intricate and delicate work that if done incorrectly can lead to misery for the patient and problems for the dentist. The implant surgery process involves an implant being inserted into the bone of the jaw and which is not readily removable. Sometimes even fillings are referred to as implants because they are part of the body tissue, and are not readily removable.

During the dental implant surgery a metal or ceramic devices is placed into holes that are drilled in the bone. This is the implant. After bone has grown around the implant and gains stability and strenght - dentures, crowns, or bridges can be fitted to them.

The implants most commonly used are made of titanium although in some cases nickel and other non-reactive metals also are used. The metal implant offer great stability and acts as anchor for the fittings.

After the surgery the dentist will carefully monitor you to check for any reactions. The body will launch an autoimmune response against anything that is inserted into the bone. The only difference is the speed of the reaction. Some may suffer reaction within days, for others this may take years before the reaction is noted.

Even relatively non-reactive metals like titanium has been shown to generate an autoimmune disease when titanium is implanted into their jaw bone during dental implant surgery. This is not good news for many dentists and patients as dental implants surgery is becoming quite popular.

Dental implants surgery can be painful till your implants heal. Pain-killers can cut out most of the pain. But the biggest advantage is that you get teeth that are almost like your own natural teeth. Also, implants surgery are a way of saving teeth. Other methods result in bone, gums and teeth deterioration.

Not all people have successful dental implant surgery. For some, it can result in complete failure for various reasons like rejection of the implant by the body, infection, incorrect dental implant surgery, insufficient bone and so on.
